Are you excited about building the AI foundation that powers real product experiences? We're thrilled to invite you to join the Data AI/ML team at Zapier as a Sr. Applied AI Engineer!
As a key member of our team, you'll be at the heart of our efforts to make AI a core part of every Zapier product. You'll help design and build the reusable building blocks-like LLM-powered APIs, vector search services, orchestration libraries, and evaluation tooling-that enable teams across the company to create AI agent experiences quickly and safely.
This is your chance to shape how AI is implemented at Zapier-from the raw data and infrastructure to the user-facing product experiences. You'll collaborate with AI Engineers, Product teams and Machine Learning Engineers to make sure our AI capabilities are scalable, reliable, and easy to use. Your work will have massive impact across the entire organization.

About You
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years building distributed, scalable cloud-based web applications.
- 1+ year of experience working with LLMs in production environments and building user-facing features using agent architectures.
- Familiar with transformer networks, attention mechanisms, function calling, and other LLM capabilities.
- Experience with LLM evaluation frameworks (performance, reliability, bias assessment).
- Familiar with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), indexing, chunking strategies, semantic search, and vector databases.
- Experienced in building, testing, deploying, and scaling LLM architectures.
- Ability to document trade-offs and build with modern cloud infrastructure.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer focus.
- Embody Zapier's values and thrive in a remote, collaborative setting.
Things You'll Do
- Build foundational AI tooling-frontend/backend components, observability, and evaluation tools.
- Work primarily in TypeScript. Experience is a plus; comfort with typed languages is essential.
- Design and implement data-driven feedback loops for monitoring and improving AI agent systems.
- Identify tooling gaps, standardize best practices across teams.
- Collaborate across engineering, infra, and data teams to ensure reusability and documentation of AI components.
- Experiment with LLMs and retrieval strategies to optimize orchestration logic.

- Applied AI Engineers: Full-stack skills with frontend/backend development and LLM focus.
- ML Engineers: More focus on data pipelines and broader ML model experience beyond LLMs.
