Head of Data Engineering

Global / Remote (1099 Contractor, Full-Time)

DMD Solutions is proud to be partnering with Foundations United in the search for a Head of Data. Foundations United is building a connected ecosystem of DAOs and blockchain-native products that redefine how communities collaborate, govern, and create.

As the Head of Data, you will own and drive all data strategy, architecture, and execution across our Web3 ecosystem of brands. This is a senior, hands-on leadership role for someone who deeply understands data—from architecture and engineering to analytics, reporting, and governance. You will design scalable data systems, lead data initiatives end-to-end, and ensure that reliable, high-quality data powers decision-making across the entire ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Data Strategy & Architecture

• Define and own the end-to-end data strategy across all brands, products, and DAOs in the ecosystem.
• Design and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performance data architectures that support real-time and batch use cases.
• Establish standards for data modeling, storage, access, and lifecycle management.
• Ensure the data stack can scale rapidly as the ecosystem grows.

Data Engineering & Infrastructure

• Architect, build, and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines that ingest data from multiple sources, including on-chain, off-chain, product, and operational systems.
• Own data warehouses, data lakes, and streaming pipelines used for analytics, reporting, and experimentation.
• Ensure data reliability, availability, and performance through monitoring, alerting, and validation.
• Optimize infrastructure for cost, speed, and developer experience.

Analytics, Reporting & Insights

• Partner with leadership, product, engineering, growth, and operations teams to define KPIs, dashboards, and reporting frameworks.
• Enable self-service analytics while maintaining strong governance and data quality.
• Translate complex data into clear insights that drive strategic and operational decisions.
• Promote data literacy and a data-driven culture across the organization.

Data Governance, Security & Compliance

• Establish and enforce data governance frameworks, including ownership, stewardship, lineage, and metadata management.
• Ensure data security, privacy, and access controls across all systems.
• Partner with legal, risk, and compliance stakeholders to align data practices with applicable regulations and industry standards.
• Proactively identify and mitigate data risks.

Leadership & Team Development

• Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing, globally distributed data team.
• Set clear priorities, execution standards, and best practices for data work.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, product, IT, and operations leaders.
• Act as the senior data voice in leadership discussions and planning.

Tooling & Ecosystem Enablement

• Evaluate, select, and implement data tools, platforms, and vendors.
• Drive automation and continuous improvement across data workflows.
• Ensure seamless integration of data systems across the broader Web3 ecosystem.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, analytics, or data platform leadership.
• Deep expertise designing and scaling modern data stacks (warehouses, lakes, pipelines, streaming systems).
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Scala).
• Proven experience building robust ETL/ELT pipelines and production-grade data systems.
• Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, metadata, and lineage.
• Experience securing sensitive data and implementing role-based access controls.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing and mentoring data professionals.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
• Comfortable operating in fast-moving, ambiguous, startup-style environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with Web3, blockchain, or crypto-native data (on-chain activity, wallets, tokenized systems).
• Familiarity with real-time data processing and event-driven architectures.
• Experience supporting global, remote-first, async teams.
• Background in regulated environments or working closely with legal/compliance teams.
• Advanced degree in computer science, data science, or a related field (nice to have).
