Lead Developer

This role is for a highly skilled Lead Developer to play a crucial role in overseeing our software development projects while ensuring compliance and maintaining high-quality standards. Living With are seeking a Lead Developer to guide the software development team on its journey to further develop the software to provide for additional condition, integrate with other providers and platforms including the NHS and to continue to build market leading software which gives patients the ability to have more control over their outcomes.

Principal Accountabilities

Technical Leadership

• Guide the architecture for backend, frontend, and mobile systems
• Define coding standards, design patterns, and best practices
• Guide feasibility studies and prototyping of features
• Review code for security, correctness, and maintainability

Team Coordination & Mentoring

• Lead team of platform and mobile developers, guiding best practices and skill growth
• Perform 121s and reviews to guide/instruct and escalate concerns to CTO where necessary.
• Conduct annual review processes
• Lead recruitment to ensure desired competencies within the team
• Estimate timelines, identify risks, and communicate status
• Break down product requirements into tasks and technical designs
• Work with dev and QA to manage sprint and release cycles utilising Jira
• Pair with developers on complex features and provide ongoing feedback
• Ensure adequate, shared support for technical support escalations

Hands-on Development

• Write and maintain code, especially the complex or critical parts of the system
• Prototype solutions, test feasibility before committing the team
• Debug and troubleshoot, handle challenging technical issues
• Provide escalated development support when lower levels are exhausted

Quality & Testing Oversight

• Collaborate with QA to ensure comprehensive test coverage and validation
• Help ensure traceability between requirements, implementation, and tests
• Support automated testing frameworks and CI/CD processes

Delivery & Release Management

• Collaborate with QA to ensure release preparedness
• Execute controlled releases during appropriate release windows
• Execute release validation processes where required
• Oversee operational readiness, monitoring, and post-release incident handling

Security & Privacy

• Enforce software secure-by-design and privacy-by-design principles
• Implement and validate security controls across the product suite
• Maintain threat models, data flow diagrams, and security documentation
• Provide support for annual security regulatory submissions (DSPT, CE+, Pen Test)

Clinical & Regulatory Alignment

• Ensure developed software complies with relevant standards
• Respond to questions to support clinical/regulatory audits/submissions and quality management processes
• Participate in risk management and hazard mitigation activities relating to developed software

Essential Skills and experience

• Hands on experience in related software languages/frameworks (Java, SpringBoot)
• Experience with mobile app development (ideally Android, iOS, React Native)
• Experience with cloud hosting solutions (ideally AWS)
• Experience with IaaS (ideally Terraform)
• Experience with configuration management solutions (ideally Ansible)
• Solid understanding of software development principles and practices
• Good task and project management abilities
• Capacity to plan, prioritise, and delegate tasks appropriately
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail
• Ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and meet project deadlines
• People leadership experience at Senior or Lead level

Desirable Skills and experience

• Experience in a development team lead role
• Health care knowledge and experience in a healthcare-related industry
