As a Lead Developer, you will take ownership of the technical delivery of software solutions across the Distribution portfolio. You will work closely with Architects, Solution Engineers, Product Owners, Developers and Testers to design, build and implement high quality applications.

While you will contribute to solution design discussions, your primary focus will be hands on development, mentoring developers, driving coding best practices and ensuring that high quality technical outputs are delivered within agreed timelines.

This role requires a blend of strong engineering capability, practical problem solving skills, and the ability to guide development teams through complex build activities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Lead Developer, responsible for:
  • Delivery Execution & Excellence
    • Lead the development of application features and integrations across the Broker Connectivity Distribution team.
    • Translate functional and non-functional requirements into robust, maintainable execution, aligned with Solutions/Architecture guidance where necessary.
    • Contribute to detailed technical design based on high‐level architecture, ensuring designs are practical for implementation.
    • Develop high-quality code following agreed GRS & Liberty Mutual technology framework and engineering standards.
    • Conduct peer reviews and ensure code quality, performance and stability prior to release.
    • Continuously develop your skills and knowledge.
  • Hands-on Technical Leadership
    • Provide day‐to‐day guidance and mentoring to developers within agile squads.
    • Support and lead the team in removing technical blockers and navigating development challenges.
    • Champion best practices in version control, branching strategies and release management.
    • Support the team in working towards continuous integration and continuous deployment, work to remove technical impediments raised by the team and proactively escalate relevant issues
    • Participate in and support recruitment, selection, and onboarding activities of new team members.
    • Support the growth of new capabilities in your teams.
    • Encourage your team members to achieve their potential by participating in and contribute to organisation/ wide initiatives.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Support
    • Work closely with Architects/Solution Engineers to refine designs and raise any inconsistent or impractical technical approaches.
    • Partner with Product Owners to clarify requirements, define user stories and estimate development effort.
    • Support business customer journey mapping by identifying technical implications and opportunities for improvement.
    • Maintain effective communication with development teams, ensuring shared understanding of solution approaches and standards.
    • Share knowledge and expertise across your department, the wider organization or beyond through networks, events and communities of practice.
  • Technical Governance & Documentation
    • Produce clear technical documentation for solutions, integrations, data flows and support processes.
    • Ensure alignment with Liberty Mutual and GRS technology frameworks, engineering standards and SDLC.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in software engineering, with 3 years as a Lead Developer, Senior Developer or similar role, working within Agile frameworks and associated architectures, design, coding languages and testing & deployment tools, including the following:
    • Strong experience with Typescript
    • Python and Java nice to have but Typescript as a minimum
    • CI/CD pipeline build & deployment tools
    • Cloud experience (AWS & Azure) and serverless code deployment
    • AWS deployment methods and skills - Lambda, Step Function, DynamoDB, SNS/SQS, S3 etc
    • API integration experience - experience building endpoints, writing, and reading OpenAPI specs
    • Understanding of event driven architecture.
    • Apigee skills desirable though not mandatory
  • Hands-on involvement with layered systems architectures, designs and shared software concepts
  • Familiar with design thinking, behaviour and test-driven development/familiarity with test-and-learn approaches
  • Experience in using Jira & Confluence
  • Experience of SQL database
  • Knowledge of containerised deployments and optimisation techniques & tools
  • Experience of working with wider project teams including Delivery Leads, Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Business Analysts and Testers
  • Experience of producing technical support documentation
  • Experience of writing technical specifications/User Stories
  • Experience of working within the full development lifecycle i.e. development, unit testing and release management
  • Experience of source code repositories, branching and version control systems e.g. GIT
  • Good background in business operations and strategies, including global technology and financial services trends
  • Critical thinking skills – Challenge a Jira story if it makes no sense. Understand why we are coding.
  • Self-starter mindset – Strong Lead in the team to take initiative.
  • Communication skills – with the team(s) often being across time zones, communication is king. Not afraid to ask questions, raise concerns, communicate blockers and actively participate and lead (where appropriate) in team ceremonies.
  • Ability to move fast and adapt in an ever-evolving AI environment.
  • BSc/BA in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field desirable

Key Performance Indicators

  • Delivery of high quality, fully tested software changes within agreed Sprints.
  • Adoption of new capabilities and technical improvements within the development team.
  • Recognised as the lead and 2face 2 of the development team, driving delivery and execution with support from Solutions Engineers and Architects.
  • A high level of accuracy for estimating stories and tasks.
  • Minimal coding errors found during SIT & UAT.
  • Smooth transition of changes from development to production.
  • Compliance with the organisation s control policies and procedures.
