The Role:
Software Development Manager (Energy & Utilities)
Role Overview
As a Software Development Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving digital transformation for one of our largest clients in the Energy & Utilities sector. Leading 4 cross-functional agile squads, you will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery, architectural integrity, and operational excellence of our digital platforms.
This is a unique opportunity for a technical, hands-on leader who can bridge the gap between Salesforce Industries (SFI / Vlocity) and AWS cloud-native architectures. You will champion software engineering best practices, mature our DevOps/CI/CD capabilities, and foster a high-performance culture that puts quality at the heart of everything we build.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Delivery Leadership & Squad Management
- Squad Orchestration: Oversee and coordinate 4 cross-functional development squads (comprising developers, QAs, BAs, and product specialists), ensuring alignment, velocity, and healthy delivery cycles.
- Agile Excellence: Collaborate closely with Product Owners and Agile Delivery Leads to manage backlog prioritization, refine sprint planning, and resolve technical blockers.
- Team Growth & Mentorship: Lead, coach, and mentor technical talent, setting clear objectives and cultivating an environment of continuous learning, psychological safety, and innovation.
2. Salesforce Industries (SFI) Technical Leadership
- Architectural Oversight: Act as the subject matter expert and technical lead for Salesforce Industries (formerly Vlocity) implementations, specifically leveraging the Energy & Utilities Cloud.
- Declarative & Programmatic Development: Guide the team in the best use of OmniStudio (OmniScripts, DataRaptors, FlexCards), Apex, LWC, and integration patterns.
- Data & Integration Architecture: Ensure robust data models and scalable integration patterns between SFI, AWS services, and third-party systems.
3. AWS Cloud-Native Engineering
- Cloud Oversight: Lead the design and delivery of cloud-native solutions on AWS, encompassing services such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SNS/SQS, and ECS/EKS.
- Infrastructure as Code: Promote and govern the use of Terraform or AWS CDK for consistent, repeatable, and auditable infrastructure deployments.
- Security & Compliance: Ensure all cloud architectures adhere to industry-standard security practices, especially critical in the regulated Energy & Utilities sector.
4. DevOps & Engineering Excellence
- CI/CD Pipeline Ownership: Drive the maturity of CI/CD pipelines (using tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or AWS CodePipeline), enabling high-frequency, reliable releases.
- Observability & SRE: Champion monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies using tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, or Splunk to maintain platform reliability and performance.
- Technical Debt Management: Identify, prioritise, and systematically address technical debt to maintain a healthy, sustainable codebase.
5. Stakeholder Engagement & Governance
- Client Relationships: Act as the senior technical point of contact for the client, translating complex technical concepts into clear business value.
- Reporting & Transparency: Provide regular, insightful delivery updates, risk registers, and capacity planning reports to senior stakeholders.
- Governance & Standards: Establish and enforce coding standards, architectural review processes, and security best practices across all squads.
What You’ll Need:
- Proven track record as a Software Development Manager or Engineering Manager leading multiple cross-functional teams.
- Deep, hands-on expertise in Salesforce Industries (Vlocity / SFI), ideally within the Energy & Utilities Cloud.
- Strong practical knowledge of AWS cloud-native architectures and services.
- Experience building and maturing DevOps/CI/CD pipelines in complex, regulated environments.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently at C-suite level.
- A coaching and servant-leadership mindset, with a passion for developing engineering talent.
- Ability to work at pace in an agile, delivery-focused environment.
Nice to Have:
- Salesforce Industries (Vlocity) certifications.
- AWS certifications (e.g., Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer).
- Experience in the Energy & Utilities sector, particularly with smart metering, billing, or customer portals.
- Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks relevant to the energy sector (e.g., GDPR, OFGEM standards).
